“Father and Son” 36 x 48 1990’s by Tom Kelly
A painting about the difficulty of dealing with the emotions of loving and caring for my son and also an aging father. It also deals with the complexity of my personality in comparison to that of my father. I used style to portray each of the three of us. Using a more realistic style I painted my Dad in gray and in a flat boring realistic style while my son is more expressionistic and painted in a simplified way. In the middle it is a portrait of myself twisted toward my son and as well as my father. At the same time I am trying to play the guitar, which is symbolic of self-fulfillment.
